Housing Graduate Assistant

 Job Description

 

The Housing Graduate Assistantship is an add-on assistantship for a graduate student that has been hired as a hall director at UWA.  In addition to standard hall director responsibilities, the graduate assistant will assist the Director of Student Life and Housing with the day-to-day operations of the Housing Office. Responsibilities:

  1. Serves as a hall director on the UWA campus.  If a hall director resigns or is removed from his/her hall director position, the graduate assistantship will also be cancelled.

  2. Coordinates the Housing disciplinary process and oversees disciplinary hearings for students who violate residence hall regulations.

  3. Assists in the selection and training of resident assistants and desk assistants.

  4. Works at the Housing Office two hours per day (Monday - Friday).  This is in addition to at least two office hours per day in his/her residence hall.

  5. Serves as the advisor to the Residence Hall Association (RHA).

  6. Coordinates RHA elections.

  7. Designates a member of RHA to represent the organization at Student Government Association meetings.

  8. Participates in all staff training.  Training begins August 1st, 2008

  9. Arrives back on campus by August 1, 2008 during the fall and January 7, 2009 during the spring semester. 

Qualifications:

  1. Must be eligible for admission to the School of Graduate Studies: Bachelor’s degree with at least a 2.75 GPA and a score of 40 or above on the Miller Analogies Test or 850 or above on the Graduate Record Exam (Verbal and Quantitative).

  2. Must maintain a 3.0 GPA in graduate school.

  3. Must have been selected as a hall director at UWA.

Supervision:

The graduate assistant reports directly to the Director of Student Life and Housing.

Benefits (In addition to the hall director benefits):

  1. $1,500 per semester scholarship (fall and spring).

Activity Commitments:

Graduate hall directors are not permitted to hold other jobs or assistantships when classes are in session.  Any exceptions to this policy must be approved in advance.

Appointments:

The starting date for the graduate assistant position is August 1, 2008.  No hall director is guaranteed employment for the summer semester or for more than one academic year.
